Unless you are living under a rock you have probably heard of Zumba. It is fast becoming one of the biggest trends in Fitness today… For those of you who might have missed it here is the Reader’s Digest Version of What Zumba is: Zumba s a Latin dance based aerobic fitness class. Until recently I hadn’t had a chance to give it a try. So I decided I would go for a month or so and then give a frank and honest review, from a girlfriend’s prospective. Before I begin there are a couple things you should know about me. #1 I love fitness umm duh I write a blog were I post about fitness once a week, so with that being said I would consider myself in pretty good shape. #2 I am super uncoordinated! Like really, it’s bad … sometimes it can even be quite embarressing. If you have read my “Meet Andie” segment you will note that my husband and I met in a club. Which is super ironic considering I am the worst dancer in the world. Trust me when I say it was not my seductive sexy dance moves that lured him to me. So hopefully you’re getting a good idea of my resistance to Zumba.
My friend Sheandi, also a fitness Enthusiat recently started teaching a Zumba class, I thought I would go and show my support and give it a try. I walked into where the class was being held at a local dance studio. #1 Issue: There were mirrors from floor to ceiling. So I could witness first hand my monumental lack of rhythm. So I tried to find a spot behind a larger woman that would help hide my reflection. This was somewhat successful… I still caught glimpses of my uncoordinated moves… but for the most part my view of the mirror was impaired by the larger lady. (whom for the record had really good moves, much better than mine) As the music started and Sheandi began the class I struggled to keep up!!! That gal can move! Serious rhythm folks! I did really well on the squat and lunge sequences but other than that I was miserably behind tempo and about two steps behind at all times. But as the night wore on I was dripping with sweat and laughing and having an absoulate blast!!! It didn’t matter that I quite possibly had the least sexiest moves in the room and my salsa and rumba lines were atrocious. I had Fun!!! A lot of Fun!! So I kept going back and a crazy thing began to happen, I started to get better. Zumba is still not a “natural” way for me to move. Now at least I can keep up (somewhat). I always have blast and clock in around 500-600 calories per hour. Not bad at all!!!
So bottom line… Zumba is a great workout, it is dancing and you’ll need to follow the steps and keep tempo. But you’ll have a blast!!! (Even if you are like me and rythmatically challenged).
Typically the cost per class is around $3-$5. Typically if you buy one of the instructor’s punch cards (10 punches/classes) the price is usually around $25-$30 making it $2.50 -$3 per class.
***Please use restroom prior to class, the jumping may cause “issues” if you have had babies. Also bring lots of Water!! You’ll need it***
