Why A Bow & Arrow Set Is Actually A Really Smart Gift Idea

· · · ·

This post brought to you by Genesis Bows. The content and opinions expressed below are that of Maybe I Will.

I know. You have visions of A Christmas Story in your head with Ralphie’s mom and the Wicked Witch hunched over you singing, “You’ll shoot your eye out, you’ll shoot your eye out” over and over again. It’s our first thought as moms! Safety first. However, teaching your kids how to handle a bow and arrow and can breed confidence and help them learn some awesome skills, as well as get them OUTSIDE! In my book, this is always a win!

Stop thinking you'll shoot your eye out and check out how much the sport of archery can teach your kids!

On our last trip up to Utah to visit my sister, we thought it would be fun to surprise the kids with the Genesis Archery bow and arrow set, complete with a target! We don’t have a lot of space in our backyard, so we thought it would be a fun activity for our visit. When we busted out the set, the kids were SOOO excited! To see their faces light up was pretty much magical. They were super pumped to give the Genesis Bow a try!

After a quick lesson on safety, we set up the target and let them give the set a try!

When I sat down to edit the pics from our trip and our bow and arrow sessions, I was dying over this pic! This sums up Miss Morgan’s attitude about archery completely! She was 100% Katniss Everdeen reincarnate! It was so fun to see her get laser-focused and become more and more confident with each arrow that went flying! She did really well! There were a few misses and some bushes may or may not have been harmed in the process! But my 11-year-old LOVED shooting! More than I even thought she would! In fact, what I thought would be a fun afternoon turned into constant requests to go outside and shoot some more! This made this mom super happy! I love getting my kids to put down the electronics and head outdoors! Let’s face it: being outdoors is just good for your soul!

What’s great about the Genesis Bow is that it worked great for my 8-year-old son, Boston, my 11-year-old daughter, Morgan, and my 30-something husband! All my kids had a blast shooting the bow and arrow! Because the bow has a draw length of 15” to 30”, everyone in the family can use this bow to shoot! We can attest to that! Everyone from my shorty Boston to my 6’2″ brother-in-law all had a blast taking turns trying to hit the target.

So why exactly is a bow and arrow a “smart” gift idea? Obviously, it’s fun and can provide hours and hours of entertainment. In addition, archery improves hand-eye coordination and balance and increases focus and patience. It’s a social sport people of any age and athletic ability can enjoy. Moreover, archery helps youth develop a strong connection with nature!! This type of recreational archery is not about hunting and weaponry. It is a hobby, just like bowling, badminton, or table tennis. See—all smart ways to get your kids to be more active and teach them a fun lifelong skill! 😉

In fact your kids may already be interacting with Genesis Bows at their schools. The Genesis Original is the official bow of the National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP®), and is used in over 13,000 schools by over 2 million youth across the U.S. each year. Since the organization was founded in 2002, NASP has made the sport of archery fun, engaging, and extremely safe and has maintained a zero archery-related injury record. (Absolutely no one has shot out an eye!)

The Genesis bow is also 100% customize-able! Make sure and check out the Genesis Build-a-Bow website they have a ton of fun color choices to make your bow as unique as the person to whom you are gifting it!

Now comes the really FUN part! One of you lovely readers can WIN a bow and arrow set from Genesis for that special someone on your list! And in the spirit of my Katniss Everdeen wannabee, may the odds be ever in your favor!

I will give the bow/arrow set to my nephew, Carson. My oldest daughter is a world-ranked professional target archer, so we have already bought a bow for our grandson. He loves to shoot with Grandpa and to try to get as good as his aunt!

I would give it to my kids (with lots of instruction first).

I would give the bow and arrow set to my little brother, Malachi! I do “knight lessons” with him wearI teach him about the good character traits that knights have (honesty, loyalty, respect for elders, ect.) and then he chooses activities that he wants to learn. I use these activities to teach him about obedience, hard work, and perserverence. He wants to learn horseback ridding, sword fiting, and archery. So far I can teach him sword fitting and horse back riding, but we don’t have a bow for him to use to learn archery. He would love a set like this!
