7 Things I Learned From My Grandma

·

This past February marked my Grandma’s 90th birthday! We had a big party for her and I even flew out to see her in Wichita, KS for the shin dig celebrating her life. My Grandma is pretty much one of my most favorite people. She has lived an amazing life and has always been a wonderful example for me. As a very fitting tribute I thought I would take the time to share with you 7 AWESOME things I have learned form this amazing woman over my 30+ years of knowing and loving her. And hopefully you’ll be as inspired and motivated by her as I have been.

7 Things I learned From My Grandma

#1. Put your marriage first: My Grandma to this day is still  SOOO much in love with my Grandpa. (even though he’s been gone for quite awhile) She is the poster child for always putting her marriage and the of your love husband first. It was always a special treat to visit my Grandparents growing up as we always lived far away from them. But every time, even from a young age I could see and sense the love they had for each other. Hopefully I am following in my Grandma’s footsteps and my hubs knows how much I love and adore him as well.

#2. It’s never too late to follow your dreams:  After my Grandpa died, my Grandma decided to go back to school and get her accounting degree. So in her sixties she did just that! We were all so proud of her! She even made the dean’s list! After graduation she became a full fledged accountant. I love that she did not use her age as and excuse and she went after her dreams!

#3. Eat Grapefruit everyday:  My Grandma LOVES grapefruit and attributes her ability to always maintain a great figure to eating her daily grapefruit.

#4. Always make time for Friends: My Grandma to this day maintains a very active social calender and is always getting together with friends to play cards and socialize. She is a great listener and is always there for her friends. And she is always there for me. Sometimes it’s easy to get stuck in our little life “bubbles” but we get more out of our lives when we step outside ourselves and serve and interact with others.

#5. Don’t forget Birthdays! In my 30+ years of life I have yet to have a Birthday go by without a card in the mail from my Grandma! And they are always on TIME! This has always made me feel so special and loved! I am really bad at this! 🙁 But it is something I am trying to get better at and be AS amazing as my Grandma!

#6. Write Your Personal History: My Grandma is probably the most talented Woman I know at this! She has a personal note for pretty much EVERY item she has saved over the years detailing the item’s history and why it was special to her! It is astounding!! As she has gotten older she is starting to gift us all with her treasures. And reading the stories and memories associated with each item makes receiving these special treasures all the more special. I have no idea how she found the time to do all this! But I am so thankful she did. 🙂

#7. Make The Most of Every DAY: My Grandma is one of the happiest most positive people I know. She always has a smile and hug for me when I see her. She treasures her life “as is” and makes the most of everyday she has been given. To still love and enjoy life at 90 is a true testament of her grace.

What have you learned from your grandparents? How have they shaped who you are today?
