Perfectly Classic Green Bean Casserole

·

Made from a deliciously creamy roux this simple made from scratch classic green bean casserole is sure to impress!

Do you have a signature dish for Thanksgiving? A dish that if you don’t show up with it, you’re in BIG time trouble?

For me, I actually have two dishes.

Every year, whether we are with my family or my husbands, there is no way I can get away with not bringing these TWO delicious dishes. And guess what? I am totally ok with that because I’m equally obsessed with my signature dishes! ????‍♀️ Nothing wrong with tooting your own horn!

Today I am sharing with you my perfectly classic green bean casserole recipe. What makes this dish is that there is not one single can of “cream of whatnot” in sight. With a homemade roux, creamy sour cream and blessed cheese this dish is melty and savory and all the good things, you want a casserole to be. And let’s not leave out the infamous french fried onions that help take this classic green bean casserole over the top. ❤

Cheesy and Savory Green Bean Casserole

In full disclosure, this dish is not healthy, low fat, or low calorie. With a couple tweaks, you could make it Keto- friendly, so there is that. This is just a fun dish to enjoy at Thanksgiving, Christmas or a random Tuesday when you are looking to impress some friends. Really, it is a dish that WILL be well received. I have some picky peeps in my family and all of them love it! I rarely have leftovers which is super sad for me! Ha!

Like any good creamy dish, it all starts with a roux. Combine your butter, and flour and stir continuously until it starts to bubble and thicken. Then you’ll add your onions, letting the roux coat onions and soften for a bit (1-2 minutes). Then add sugar and sour cream, mix until sour cream melts and creates a nice, rich cream sauce.

Then add your green beans – I personally love the french cut beans, which are a little thinner and not has chewy so it provides a nice texture. I have tried this with frozen beans and it was a disaster! So DO NOT try frozen beans- stick with canned! I have used canned beans from our garden, back in the day when I had time and space for such things. This was my personal fave! So if you are a canner, – then your beans will be amazing in this!

Once all the ingredients have been combined, layer in an 8×8 glass pan.- I usually double the recipe when feeding a crowd! Then layer with sharp cheddar and french fried onions.
