The Best Old Fashioned Oatmeal Raisin Cookies

· ·

I remember the first time I met Kelly’s grandmother. Her bright white hair cut stylishly short, her piercing blues eyes staring at me, taking me in and offering me a sweet smile. She felt like an old friend I had the privilege of meeting after a long while.

After a couple meetings, she would never forget to tell me that twins run in the family. It actually became kind of a joke between Kelly and his siblings always reminding me that twins run in the family. Thank goodness I never got to find out first hand the blessing of “twins in the family.” Maybe, my girls, will one day enjoy this bit of luck 😉

Now that Kelly and I have been married for 17 years, I have grown quite fond of his sweet Grandmother Lois. She has lived a hard and challenging life but manages to keep a smile on her face and a never-ending supply of the most delicious old fashioned oatmeal raisin cookies on hand.

We recently gathered together to celebrate Grandma Lois’s 90th birthday. As we sat on the church stage filled with the descendants of her 7 living children waiting to get our photo taken, I looked around and was surrounded by family. I was filled with love for the woman that created this amazing group of people that I now was able to call my own family, which is a gift I treasure.

As part of the celebration her secret old fashioned oatmeal raisin cookie recipe was shared and as a tribute to this amazing woman and these amazing cookies, I now am excited to share this recipe with you.

These cookies are so chewy and light, the ultimate old fashioned oatmeal raisin cookies from back in the day.

Before you get started – you want to soak your raisins in boiling water so that they plump up and get all juicy and even more yummy!

Cream together the butter and sugar until light and creamy, then add eggs and vanilla.

Mix your dry ingredients–flour, salt, baking soda, cinnamon, allspice, and nutmeg.

Combine dry ingredients with wet then add in applesauce and oatmeal and all those yummy raisins! Refrigerate for 1-2 hours until the delivery ough is cold.

Spoon dough onto prepared cookie sheet. I like to use parchment paper because it means easier cleanup and helps the cookies to bake more evenly.

So you may be wondering why I’m sharing an obviously unhealthy treat on my health and wellness site? The answer to that is you only live once and treats should be a part of life. I once saw a quote that said: “ You should never limit any food, but there should be a limit on all foods”. So yes, eat the cake and the delicious old fashioned oatmeal raisin cookies but enjoy them, like all things, in moderation.
